ENERGY USAGE POLICY
INTRODUCTION
The Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram (HATIM) envisions a Deemed University and was established under the aegis of the Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM) with a mission to seek, share and serve the society through the medium of education and acting as a platform for those who do not have the means to go to cities or mainland India for higher education. The college campus is a place for agents of change. Along with the objective of integrating green campus with sustainability, the institution deems conservation of natural resources and energy in any form essential and crucial for future generations.
Generally speaking, energy conservation involves taking steps to lower end-use energy use. One way to increase efficiency is to install energy-efficient lighting. Conserving energy can be achieved by manually turning off lights when not in use or by using timers or motion sensor switches.
POLICY STATEMENT
Environment-friendliness and energy harvesting are of prime interest today, which are the key factors in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for any organization. Keeping these factors in specifying energy policy of Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram (HATIM), the institution, therefore, aims at transforming the usage and preservation methods and principles for the support of energy consumption in the campus.
Increasing demand of energy is also another factor of concern. Since conventional sources cannot meet this requirement easily, the institution has incorporated establishment of alternate energy sources in the form of Solar PV generation. The institution energy policy also has taken an efficient energy management and conservation through good established procedures specified in its policy.
The Energy policy of Higher and Technical Institute, Mizoram (HATIM) aims to monitor, conserve and manage the energy needs of the campus with the growth in the energy demands of the institute. Thus, it is the responsibility of the institute in creating awareness among the students and staff about the energy conservation measures; maintain efficient usage of Electrical Energy with maximum utilization of Renewable PV Power Generating system and Optimal consumption of lighting load with the proper energy conservation measures in the campus. Also maintain green energy campus with utilization of energy management system.
OBJECTIVES
· To understand one’s responsibility towards energy conservation.
· To implement responsible procedures for energy conservation
· To reduce energy waste on campus for all activities and programmes.
· To evaluate our energy use and quantify the environmental effects of it.
· To save energy by installing LED lighting and to implement further steps to consistently enhance our energy usage.
· Keeping an eye on new energy and environmental challenges and responding to them. To improve our own environmental performance, we want to strengthen the environmental knowledge and abilities of our staff and students.
· Providing chances for staff members and students to participate in environmental advocacy.
· Students will be informed about this policy through internal means, and it will be accessible to all interested parties on the college website. Under the direction of the college principal, the Eco Club members will regularly examine the environment and energy policy, objectives, and targets.
ACTION PLAN
1. Conduct Green Audit and/or Energy Audit as and when necessary
2. Maintain the energy needs of the campus with back-up power supply system for supplying uninterrupted energy demands.
3. Use of LED lamps and replacement of any existing conventional lamps or lightning with LED Lamps.
4. Monitor electricity usage and Bills for efficient utilization by encouraging control of the use of electricity on the campus and by encouraging the community members to use more natural light wherever applicable.
5. Encouraging students, teachers, and staff to be energy efficient by encouraging vehicle pooling and other environment-friendly means of transportation.
6. Installation of Solar panels in the college campus to minimize the use of non-renewable sources of energy.
7. Providing chances for staff members and students to participate in environmental advocacy.
8. To develop a systematic waste management system in the campus.
CONCLUSIONS
The above strategies and procedures of implementation are subject to change in view of the needs and demands of time and place. The policy will be communicated to all stakeholders of the institution, staffs, and employees of the college. All stakeholders and members of the college are to abide by the policy to make energy conservation and spread awareness of energy conservation on the college campus.
