The Department of Social Work at HATIM has grown significantly over the course of 13 years, providing students with a comprehensive and practical curriculum that blends academic knowledge, practical experience, and community involvement. The department has been successful in producing graduates who possess the essential skills, knowledge, and empathy to make a meaningful impact in society.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

I. Basic Computer Skills Training for Newly admitted Students: In order to equip the first semester students (2023-2027 batch) with fundamental computer skills, an extensive training session was conducted by the department at the IT Centre located in the college campus on July 10th, 2023. The training aimed to provide hands-on experience in using the widely-used tools of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Through this session, students were able to learn the basics of creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, and charts, as well as saving and sharing files effectively.

II. Exposure Visit to Assam Rifle: On August 2nd, 2023, the department undertook an exposure visit to the 3rd Naga Hill, situated in Lunglawn, Lunglei. The objective of the visit was to provide students with valuable career guidance and opportunities to learn about joining the Indian Army. The program was graced by two distinguished officers, Second in Command Lt. Col. Rajnikant Gidwani, and Deputy Commandant MN Khama. The two officers warmly welcomed the students and engaged them in an interactive and informative program. They shared their vast knowledge and experience, encouraging the students to pursue a career in the Assam Rifles. The visit was undoubtedly a success, and the students left with a newfound appreciation for the Assam Rifles and the opportunities it offers.

III. Interaction with ADRA Wash Coordinator: An interaction with Adventist Development and Relief Agency(ADRA) and the students of  Department of Social Work was held on 1st August, 2023 in which Ms. Sobha Jose, WASH Coordinator, ADRA had the opportunity to highlight the programs and services rendered by their agency and the prospects on working with refugees from Myanmar. She extended an invitation to the department in working together for the refugees in all aspects.

IV. Extended Lecture: On the 11th of August 2023, an extended lecture/invited lecture was conducted on the topic of Training Refugee Women on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Related Concerns. The lecture was delivered by Mr. R. Lallianzela, Assistant Professor, and Miss. Gracy Lalrinfeli Fanai, Guest Lecturer, and was organized by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). The training event took place at the Synod Conference Hall in Salem, Lunglei. The program is scheduled to be facilitated in coordination with the resource person from the District Child Protection Unit, Lunglei, and the Department of Social Work, HATIM.

On September 20th, 2023, Ms. Rebecca L.P. Lalnunhlui, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Gracy Lalrinfeli Fanai, Guest Lecturer, gave an extended lecture on Capacity Building of Protection Facilitators and CFS Facilitators on Child Protection, Women Empowerment, and Gender-Based Violence. The lecture was organized by Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and took place at Sap Upa Leh Pu Buanga Hall, BCM Headquarters Office in Serkawn. The lecture was given to the facilitators of Thaizawl Camp, Hnahthial Camp, and Ramthar Camp.

V. One Day Workshop on SPSS: On 28th August, 2023, the Department of Social Work, HATIM organized one-day Workshop on Data Analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). In the first session, the Resource Person, Mr. RTC. Lalremruata, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, HATIM, delivered a lecture on topics such as scale of measurement, data entry, processing of data, measures of central tendency, standard deviation, correlation, and interpretation of the results. The lecture was followed by hands-on practice to enhance clarity. The Second session covered the topics such as Chi-Square Test, Independent sample t-test and paired t-test. The meaning, assumptions of each test, test of normality, test of homogeneity, and the substitute test were discussed followed by hands-on practice for clarity.

VI. Career Guidance in Social Work Education Program: Career guidance was organised on 15th September, 2023 at Bethesda Higher Secondary School. The Program mainly focuses on Introducing Social Work education to the students for their career guidance. A PowerPoint presentation on the topic of Suicide Prevention was also presented. Bachelor of Social Work Students delighted us with a very moving short skit.

VII. Parents Teachers Meeting: Parent-Teachers meeting was organised on 23rd October, 2023 (Monday) at the college Auditorium. The program had three sessions. The first session was concerned with Academics and Curriculum. A special item was performed by BSW Female Voice. In the second session, group discussions with faculties and parents were held. The third session was held for Feedback session in which parents gave their feedback and shared their experiences.

VIII. Workshop on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA): The Department of Social Work conducted a one-day workshop on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) on September 11, 2023, at Hatim Auditorium, Kawmzawl, for the third and fifth semester students. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. R. Lallianzela, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Vanlalhmangaihi, Guest Lecturer, who served as resource persons for the event. The workshop was structured into both theoretical and practical sessions, providing attendees with a comprehensive learning experience.

IX. Workshop on Leadership and Team Management: The Department, in partnership with Relief and Development and the Baptist Church of Mizoram, held a one-day workshop on Leadership and Team Management. The workshop took place on January 31st, 2024, on the college campus. Its primary objective was to inculcate leadership orientation and team management skills among the students. The workshop was structured into two sessions, comprising a PowerPoint presentation delivered by the resource person, followed by a group discussion. The workshop was designed to equip the students with essential leadership and team management skills, and it was conducted in a highly engaging and interactive format. The PowerPoint presentation delivered by the resource person was comprehensive and insightful, covering key aspects of leadership and team management.

X. Observation of World Social Work Day:  As usual, on March 19, 2024, the Department of Social Work celebrated World Social Work Day. The event was held at the Science Center in Zohnuai Lunglei and facilitated the newly elected councillors of Lunglei Municipal Council, who are proud alumni of the Department of Social Work. The program also featured a range of activities, including thought-provoking keynote addresses, group singing, cake cutting, and department review and exhortation speech. The event demonstrated the department's unwavering commitment to raising awareness about the importance of social work and its impact on communities and the event was a grand success.

XI. Block Placement (Internship): As part of their field practicum, our sixth semester students engaged in a block placement from 15th Jan to 15th Feb 2024, which serves as their final training process at the agency or organization of their preference before graduation. The block placement was conducted in and outside of the State, with students carrying out their block placement in Shillong, Nagaland and various districts within Mizoram, including Aizawl, Hnahthial and Lawngtlai districts. The experience provided our students with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the field.
