As we mark the completion of our fourth year since inception in 2020, it brings me immense joy to present the annual report of the Department of Psychology for the academic year 2023-2024. Over the past years, our department has remained steadfast in its commitment to promoting mental health awareness, imparting essential life skills, and fostering all-around development among our students.
Since its establishment, the Department of Psychology has been dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, interpersonal dynamics, and societal roles. Our overarching mission is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical principles necessary for personal growth, professional success, and responsible citizenship.
The academic year witnessed significant changes in the curriculum with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In 2023, the Department of Psychology admitted its first batch of students under the National Education Policy 2020. These students represent a new era in Indian higher education, characterized by a renewed focus on holistic development, flexibility, and innovation.
Throughout the academic year 2023-2024, our department has continued to uphold its mission through various initiatives and programs:
1. Mental Health Awareness programmes: In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10, 2023) and World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2023), various activities such as leading community devotion, poster-making, Jar of Hope and Friendship Board were organized. This awareness campaign to promote mental health literacy and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. This initiative was aimed at empowering students to recognize the importance of mental well-being and to seek help when needed.
2. Practical Application: The course curriculum includes practical classes aimed at enhancing students' proficiency in using psychological tools for assessment and intervention. From psychological testing and counseling techniques to behavioral observation, students gain valuable experience that prepares them for real-world application.
3. Research Enhancement: Project work integrated into the curriculum helped in enhancing students' research skills and fosters a spirit of inquiry. Through independent and collaborative research projects, final year (V semester) students had the opportunity to explore topics of interest, contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field, and develop critical thinking and analytical abilities.
4. Departmental Parent-Teacher Meeting: On October 20, 2023, the Department of Psychology organized a departmental parent-teacher meeting, providing an opportunity for faculty members to engage with parents and guardians and present the newly implemented National Education Policy (NEP) curriculum. In addition to presenting the NEP curriculum, the parent-teacher meeting facilitated one-on-one interactive sessions between faculty members and parents/guardians. This allowed parents/guardians to gain a deeper understanding of their child's academic journey, discuss any concerns or questions they may have, and receive personalized guidance and support from faculty members. The parent-teacher meeting served as a platform for open communication, collaboration, and partnership between faculty members and parents/guardians.
5. Fieldwork for final semester students: As part of the curriculum, final semester students engaged in fieldwork activities that serve as an integral component of their learning experience. The fieldwork provided students with valuable opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, gain practical experience, and develop essential skills for professional practice. As part of their fieldwork component, students had the unique opportunity to engage with various organizations specializing in substance-related work and providing support to troubled youths. These organizations include- MHIP Drop-in Centre, WADA, Grace Society, and Observation Home.
6. Departmental Quiz Competition: In addition to our academic endeavors, the Department of Psychology organized a departmental quiz competition on March 4, 2024. The event aimed to provide students across all semesters with an entertaining yet enriching learning experience, fostering camaraderie, teamwork, and intellectual engagement. The students were divided into three groups- Kohlberg’s Crew, Skinner’s Scholars and Pavlov’s Prodigies, and Skinner’s Scholars emerged as the winning team, followed by Kohlberg’s Crew and Pavlov’s Prodigies respectively.
