Departmental Report - Psychology (2022-2023)

The department will reach a major milestone by having its first graduating class in this academic year (2022-2023). In addition, the department also has a promising number of students who will major in psychology in the coming years.

At the beginning of this academic year (2022-2023), the Department had 5 faculty members, and two faculty members- Martin Lallawmsiama Ralte and Lalrinfela, departed after one semester. With the addition of a new guest faculty, there are currently four faculty members (as of March 2023):

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES:

 

Following are the activities the Department of Psychology have taken during the past year:

 

1)      Interactive program with Ms. Lalrinmawii (Amawii):

A short interactive session was held on the 29th August 2022 with famous musician Ms. Lalrinmawii (Amawii), vocalist of the band Matilda and the Quest, who is a Psychology Ph.D scholar at Mizoram University. The session focused on Psychology and music. The session was attended by members of the band Cassettes, students from Psychology and Education departments, as well as faculty members from various departments.      

                   

2)      Post-it Note event in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day:

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, the department organized a “Post-it note” event on 9th September 2022, where students could write hopeful and uplifting messages and post it on a board for others to see. The event was organized in accordance with the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day, “Creating hope through action”.

The objective of the event was to create a fun and meaningful way to promote awareness around mental health, suicide prevention and stigma reduction by writing messages of support. The messages served as a way to boost self-esteem, bring the students together and create a positive learning environment.

The event concluded very successfully with a total of 214 entries.

 

3)      Photography, Poster making & Logo Competition:

In preparation for World Mental Health Day, 10th October 2022, the Department of Psychology organized various competitions. Publicity regarding the competitions was announced on the 11th of September 2022 via posters that were put up in various department classrooms and offices. The themes for the competition were in line with the theme of World Mental Health Month: “Make mental health for all a global priority”.

 

The Photography and Poster competition was open to all students, faculty, and staff. The logo competition was limited to the students of the department of psychology. The competitions received a good number of entries. Prizes were distributed on the 21st of October 2022 during the community assembly.

 

Prizes for the competitions were obtained from donations from various generous sponsors and from the department fund that had been collected previously.

4)      Departmental Parent-Teacher meeting:

For the first time, an offline Parent-teacher meeting was conducted with the parents of Psychology core final year students in the college campus on the 30th January 2023 at HATIM campus. Presentations were given by the faculty regarding academics, especially Field Report which is a partial requirement for completion of their course, as well as career awareness and guidance. This meeting was organized to have a closer working relationship with the parents of our students as well as a chance to inform the parents about the curricular activities of the department.  

 

5)      Career counseling session:

On the 17th of February 2023, the department organized a career counseling session for all students of psychology (core and elective). The session was headed by Ms. H. Rinmuanawmi. The session was organized with the aim of introducing the students to different career options available in the field of psychology.

 

6)      Internship program (field report):

In accordance with their course requirements, the final year students went on an internship programme guided by faculty members- Ms. H. Rinmuanawmi and Ms. R. Lalfamkimi. The students went to Child Guidance Centre located in Laipuitlang, Aizawl for an internship programme. The students were divided into two groups, with each group spending a week for the internship. At the centre, the students were able to attend theory classes as well as practical activities to enhance their knowledge about the different childhood disorders, their treatments and rehabilitation.

 

7)      Faculty exchange program & Autism Awareness program:

Faculty exchange program was successfully organized between the Department of Psychology, HATIM and Department of Psychology, Aizawl West College.

On 5th April, 2023, Dr Lalremruati, Associate Professor, Govt. Aizawl West College delivered a lecture to the VI Semester psychology students and conducted a session on 'Autism Awareness' which was attended by the students and faculties of the department of Education, Social Work and Psychology.

On 10th April 2023, Ms H. Rinmuanawmi, Asst. Professor, HATIM delivered a lecture to the VI semester psychology students of Govt. Aizawl West College.
